Dirty New Towns

My on-going fascination with slightly crap English attempts at Utopianism continues and has received a boost with the re-issue of Gillian Darley's excellent book Villages of Vision.

Amongst the disparate visionary settlements she has included is Silver End, an Art Deco/Modernist village in Essex for workers at the Crittal window factory. Nowadays the slightly careworn houses sit unexpectedly in their rural setting. There are some nice pics of it alongside some other examples of Essex Moderne (a very niche sub-genre of architecture it has to be said)here . The ones of Frinton On Sea are interesting partly because Frinton is Britain's Most Repressed Seaside resort, and home to Charles Voysey's house The Homestead.
